But Cyberpunks were reliably obsessive about these matters. The other day I was looking at the SF rack in an airport shop. When he wrote City Come A-Walkin' in the late 1970s, he was as far into the punk scene as you could go and still produce a coherent novel-rock musician, omnipresence in the underground scene in Portland, wildman, writer. I know that Bruce Sterling hailed Blood Music as one of the founding texts of cyberpunk but I cannot see it myself. In that video referenced in the introduction to our discussion, Rudy remarks that it's awfully hard to be the speaker who has to follow the jaw-droppingly articulate and idea-overflowing Bruce Sterling.

Since 1990 or so, popular culture has included a movement or fashion trend that calls itself "cyberpunk", associated especially with the rave/techno subculture. Snowden mentioned that they were not able to either confirm or deny the Rubik's cube smuggling business, but he did gift one to everyone in the office so those things were passing in and out all the time and were very hard to keep track of. This will definitely expand my horizons and hopefully give me an appreciation of the other side of SF.

I don't really care about technology or IRL stuff, but cyberpunk is a comfy style for the digital world. If you were really serious about being snooty you would be aiming for first edition, first printing. Dick, who died in 1982, and the eminent Ray Bradbury became the first authors from the science-fiction field to be widely recognized simply as important writers. Chapters cover topics such as globalization, virtual reality, cyborg culture, environmentalism, religion, motherhood and queer rights.

But Wells earns his place, in the words of Brian Aldiss (in Trillion Year Spree), as the ‘Shakespeare’ of sci-fi because he takes ordinary people and tests their reactions to technology and its consequences — shaven monkeys from Woking pitted against the intellects of Martians, vast and cool and unsympathetic. I don’t think a change is necessary, but I also wouldn’t really see any downside to it.

Hugh Howey sold the print rights to his underground sci-fi hit, Wool, to Simon & Schuster for a “mid-six-figure” advance. This is a superb, punchy, action-packed caper from one of the greatest contemporary SF novelists. I think starting with Accelerando was a mistake. Examples of this are everywhere but the main theme remains, high tech low life, in a very dark and dystopian, near-future world. Expanding the boundaries of science, one page at a time SciFi Question of the Day: What are the next synonyms for "delicious" considering that cultures of different languages are interacting more and more?

The success of The Matrix put those choreographers in high demand by other filmmakers who wanted fights of similar sophistication: for example, Yuen Woo-ping's brother Yuen Cheung-Yan was choreographer on Daredevil (2003).
