Until recently, there has been little domestic science fiction literature in Korea. [109] Within the small field, the author and critic writing under the nom de plume Djuna has been credited with being the major force. [110] Kim Boyoung, Bae Myunghoon and Kwak Jaesik are also often mentioned as the new generation of Korean science fiction writers of 2010s. [111] The upswing that began in 2009 has been attributed by Shin Junebong to a combination of factors. [112] Shin quotes Djuna as saying, "'It looks like the various literary awards established by one newspaper after another, with hefty sums of prize money, had a big impact.'" [112] Another factor cited was the active use of Web bulletin boards among the then-young writers brought up on translations of Western SF. [113] In spite of the increase, there were still no more than sixty or so authors writing in the field at that time. His screenplay for Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, was something else, though. The Cyberpunk hero is an anti-hero, a rebel, a person who lives on the edge, outside the safe enclaves of the protected and coccooned middle and upper classes. On peut supposer qu'une telle fascination pour les machines vient de la découverte par le grand public, à la fin des années 1970, de la puissance de calcul des ordinateurs émergents et des possibilités que l' informatique promet alors. It seems to me that they must, inevitably. The term science fiction was popularized, if not invented, in the 1920s by one of the genre’s principal advocates, the American publisher Hugo Gernsback.

In the French-speaking world, the colloquial use of the term sci-fi is an accepted Anglicism for the term science fiction. [114] This probably stems from the fact that science fiction writing never expanded there to the extent it did in the English-speaking world, particularly with the dominance of the United States. The Internet had helped writers give cyberspace a needed makeover. The images of a technological utopia of white marble, glass, and steel, have devolved here into a dehumanizing utopia, a world closer to the regimentation of Nazi Germany than to the visions of corporate America. "The Gernsback Continuum" was a radical text, an assertion that science fiction had to challenge and perhaps surrender its utopian and optimistic impulses, that it must speak to an age full of ambivalent feelings towards technology, a world created by intimate machines and digital media, a disorderly world where various groups from complex cultural backgrounds must interact and struggle for control.

For centuries, men, women, and even children, have filled narrow cubicles in skyscraping office buildings, rusty factory floors, and poorly lit illegal damp basements to slave for the survival of their families. Ostensibly about aliens exploring and trying to understand human culture after mankind has either left the planet or died off, the book is much more about some of the more powerful human archetypes. That leads to both some great moments and, frankly, some boring sections.
