As Cinderella is running she escapes past palace guards because they think she is a peasant but she leaves one of her shoes that the prince finds and declares he will find his beloved princess. Behind the scenes on our project, we have a note that says “What to do about Sesame Street?” This is a big question for us because of the way Sesame Street works with fairy tales. On Sunday 28th at 11.30am, there will be a Screening of Peerifool: An Orkney Fairytale - a tremendous tale about three little girls who outwit an ogre.

Folklore thus moves beyond the study of the old and time-honored to explore emergent meanings and cultural forms. In fact, I’m not quite sure I even liked this retelling of Hans Christian Andersson’s “The Emperor and the Nightingale,” although the critics loved it. (I find most of Andersson’s fairy tales a bit depressing, actually.) However, I wonder if my adult sensibility gets in the way. I love the sections she divided them into, they have titles like 'Brave, Bold and Wilful', 'Sillies' and 'Good Girls and Where it Gets Them'.

Jack Zipes’s The Irresistible Fairy Tale: The Cultural and Social History of a Genre (Princeton University Press, 2012) is a 250-page account of the origin, evolution, and uses of fairy tales, with many fascinating examples. Born in Bloody Harlan, Kentucky, Rachel teaches college near Springfield, Ohio. In Perrault's version, the story ends with Red Riding Hood being gobbled up by the wolf, and neither she nor her grandmother comes back to life. In Helen Ketteman’s Cinderella parody, Bubba, the Cowboy Prince (Scholastic, 1997), Bubba is an overworked cowhand, bossed around on the family ranch by his mean stepdaddy and stepbrothers Milton and Dwayne.

It’s a sort of People’s History of folklore. Comprising the vast majority of fairy lore, their stories are among the most commonly known and enjoyed around the turf fire. Yeats quickly became obsessed with her after they met in 1889 and she was inspiration for much of his poetry. I can't really help you appraise art by these artists, or help you write a term paper that's due tomorrow morning. They will give children a place for their imaginations to flourish and for reasonable desires to form.

I love tales of good versus evil, because they call out the hero in each of us.
