For me, it felt like an old art school model, there was lots of interaction and there was still a studio culture, so it was an attractive place to work.’ 122 Hazel Bruce remembers the teaching methods until quite recently as being ‘more a Bauhaus kind of idea, of giving everyone time and space and it was very much tutorial led.’ Now the course ‘is more content led, it is about groups and workshops and seminars and a structure’ and ‘it is much more 118 Interview Michael Brennand-Wood, 10/11/2011, London 119 Interview Wilma Kirkpatrick, 14/12/2011, Belfast 120 Interview Hazel Bruce, 22/8/2011, Belfast 121 Interview Karen Fleming, 8/8/2011, Belfast 122 Interview Michael Brennand-Wood, 10/11/2011, London 136 taught.’ Since the recession and the increases in university fees (2008) students ‘all have jobs’ and a lot live at home and travel and they ‘can’t afford the travel from Derry’ unless ‘they know when their workshops and tutorials and seminars are and they know educationally why they are in.’ 123 To ‘expect them all to be in the studio the rest of the time – that is just unrealistic’ so the studio culture has disappeared, more through economic factors than educational changes. 124 Nigel Cheney, as the external examiner for Galway, feels the students there have a different learning experience to those at NCAD, ‘they are left more to themselves and it is their journey and they are left to define themselves and push themselves on.’ It is a ‘more gentle system’ and one that he is familiar from his own student days and ‘it had lots of benefits … but I think society and the world are very different … and students need to be leaving with different things from what I had.’ 125 Cheney doesn’t believe in ‘the good old days when students were better’, he thinks ‘they have the same hunger and motivation’ as they always had. 126 Hazel Bruce agrees that ‘20 or 30 years ago you took 10 students a year and they were all quite skilled’ but now with government led growth in numbers you ‘have to take a lot of people who are less competent’ but ‘you always have a core of 10 good strong students.’ Bruce thinks students today are ‘much more aware of all the things you need to do to succeed.’ There were 17 in her year group at Manchester ‘and 400 people had applied for that course’ but of those 17 - only Bruce and Cheney are still involved in textiles.

That’s not my intent with the work and it’s not how I intend it to be read.’ When she puts an emphasis on the ‘making process’ or on ‘craftsmanship’ it is because ‘the making matters’ but the ‘idea that makers don’t have a concept’ bothers her as does ‘the idea that people who have concepts wouldn’t want to make.’ 95 Bernadette Madden speaks for most of the textile makers when she says, ‘It’s not that I would say that what I do is ‘Art’ but it could be, even though it is Batik’ … or cloth or stitch. 96 Howard Risatti (2007) believes that ‘intention is an important, even essential’ factor in the creation of fine art. 97 He proposes that ‘art making is an expressive act’ that is ‘captured, embedded’ in the art object and this can only happen as ‘the result of a conscious, intentional act of making on the part of the maker.’ 98 So the first step in critical evaluation should be to consider the maker’s intention, and then if their intention is ‘an expressive act’ a second and separate question can be asked, ‘did it succeed?’ This is where a doubling of meaning comes into play, the maker’s intention to mean, and the meaning that the viewer brings to the work.
